THE LOST BESTIARY

Bestiaries were allegorical animal books that were written and illustrated during the Middle Ages. Animals both mythical and real are listed in these volumes, which adds to the fun. I was so captivated by the often outlandish depictions of familiar* African and European animals that I started to wonder what animals from Australia would look like. Next thing I knew, I was branching out to other themes too.
Kangaroo
Koala
Tyrannosaurus rex
Triceratops
Velociraptor
Pteranodon
Kappa
Tengu
Nine-tailed fox
Kirin (Qilin) (Chinese unicorn)
Baku
Japanese dragon
European dragon
Giant panda
Red panda
Tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog)
"O thou clever girl!"
Wyvern
Carnotaurus
Iguanodon

* Familiar to us in the twenty-first century, anyway.
